What is a cinematographer’s job?

The word “Cinematography” [not Cinematographer] is a broad and all-encompassing term to describe lighting, compositions and camera movement.

“The cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist” — Gordon Willis, ASC.

To properly define a cinematographer’s job is to understand the difference between a Cinematographer, Director of Photography (DP/DoP) or Lighting Cameraman.

Some would argue the terms are interchangeable. Acquiring an accurate description can only be understood by taking into account the regional differences in the term. In Canada, I have found that a Director of Photography does not operate the camera themself. The term Cinematographer typically indicates they are behind the camera. Personally, I enjoy composition and framing too much to assign an operator and has motivated me making the distinction.

Early in film school I spent a great deal of time trying to wrap my head around what a cinematographer does and their specific role. But my favorite description of a cinematographer came from the DP at The Border wrap party.

“Know your s — t but the cinematographer’s role is to be a friend”

In an industry that can be cold, brutal and competitive I think he might have it right.
